The Republic of the Philippines is a country in the south Pacific.  It's capital city is Manila.  The Philippine Islands are a group of over 7,100 islands, also called Philippine Archipelago, but only 700 are occupied. 

The Philippines  are predominantly Roman Catholic

The country's name originated with Ruy López de Villalobos naming the islands of Samar and Leyte.
